From "Call Me Jonah"

America, where are we going? What future lies ahead for our nation? My good friend has great hope for the future of America. He is an optimist. I find his optimism contagious...but difficult to accept in light of the division and strife which today plague us. Our side fights a holding action, trying to keep the legions of the new pagans outside our fortifications. We do not realize that we already have thrown open the gates and that they roam among us as wild lions, ravaging, destroying, seeking innocent blood to plunder. We are on a path to destruction, strife, internal conflict and dictatorship.
“Unless...” Hear that word, filled with suspense. Unless...what? Unless those of us who know the Truth stand fast and witness. Unless we refuse to participate in the dissolution of this culture. Unless we become what God promised us to be: a holy priesthood, set apart. Peter says in his first letter to the church, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people...” (1 Peter 2.09a) Obviously, Peter is not speaking to America. He is speaking to the Church. We--the church, Christ’s body--are called. For what? “...that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2.09b)
